Sarah and Hamish – Why I love my Figaro
While we were having fun at the 35th Big Birthday Bash in the summer, we got talking to some lovely Figgy owners about what it is that makes their Figgy special. There was one story which really captured out hearts, and it is such a privilege to be able to share it with our community. Sarah and Hamish inherited their Figaro from Sarah’s uncle, Gordon, after he sadly passed away in 2025. Knowing that preserving his beloved car would help them to keep a link to him, Sarah and Hamish collected Flash (named by Gordon after Flash Gordon!) in June 2026.
Gordon was a member of the Figaro Owners Club and shared his love of his Fig with the club, preserved here on the website. It is a fitting tribute for his family to share what makes this car so special for them as well.
Gordon originally bought Flash via Ceefax (remember that?!) on 28th October 2005 at a cost of £6,900, which is about £13,300 in 2026. When he bought it there was a little over 55,000km on the clock. Gordon took such great care of Flash that he only added 4,000km in nearly 20 years of ownership! Very much a special occasions car, and not ever driven in the rain, we are told. Sarah told us that Gordon chose his career as an undertaker because of his love of cars, but he didn’t like driving too fast, so some might say that a Figaro was the perfect car for him.
Gordon maintained Flash very well, with some restoration work being undertaken at The Figaro Shop in 2024. Flash is proud that he’s never needed any welding or paint work – he is still sporting his original lapis grey colour. Sarah describes the car as being Gordon’s “pride and joy”, and it is lovely to know that they are carrying that legacy forward for him.
As well as the history of the car in the UK, Sarah and Hamish have a great history of Flash’s time in Japan. They have inherited a lot of records including insurance and service receipts, and service documentation. They know that in 1997, Flash was in Takamatsu, before moving to the Okayama Prefecture in 2001/2, and then on to Aichi Prefecture in 2005. His last stop in Japan was Kitakyushu in July 2005, before deregistration for export and shipping in December 2005 when he made his way to the UK.
Sarah and Hamish have lots of plans to make the most of their ownership of Flash. As well as enjoying attending the 35th Big Birthday Bash, they have plans to go to other car shows and to build a garage for Flash to continue to ensure his comfort long into the future.
Thank you for becoming new custodians, Sarah and Hamish!
