Description:
This tour includes a drive along the western shore of Strangford Lough, a stop at Cloud Nine Coffee Shop for lunch, a visit to Mount Stewart House, and a ferry trip.
We will meet at the car park at the Quoile river near Downpatrick at 10.30am and when ready drive northwards hugging the western shore of Strangford Lough – the largest sea inlet the wider British Isles, covering 150 km2 (58 sq mi). The lough is almost fully enclosed by the Ards Peninsula and is linked to the Irish Sea by a long narrow channel at its south-eastern edge. It is part of the Strangford and Lecale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
We will stop for a comfort break at Little Eddies Coffee Shop (near Whiterock) before continuing to Cloud Nine Coffee Shop at Newtownards for a lunch break. The coffee shop overlooks Newtownards Flying Club private airfield.
We will then begin driving down the east coast of Strangford Lough stopping for a visit to Mount Stewart House – a neo-classical house, celebrated gardens and demesne – entry fee £16.00 – where we are free to roam and/or look round the house and of course the coffee shop.
We will then continue south to Portaferry where we will take the ferry across the narrow inlet of Strangford Lough – fare £8 – to Strangford village from where is is an 8 mile drive back to our starting point – ETA 6.00pm.
