Petrol and Diesel Phase Out in Jersey – Used Car Ban Dropped!
Figaro Owners Club is delighted to announce that the used car ban from 2030 has been dropped from the Jersey Government’s plans!
The club worked closely with members and the broader classic car community over in the Channel Islands after the Jersey Government announced a proposal to ban petrol and diesel cars being brought onto the island from 2030.
We submitted a letter raising our concerns, and club member Caroline kindly represented the club at the recent meeting from which we now have an initial outcome ahead of updated proposals that the Jersey Government will present in the coming weeks.
Jersey’s Minister for the Environment, Deputy Steve Luce, stated:
“… it has already become very clear that there is overwhelming support to modify the approach envisaged in the Carbon Neutral Roadmap. In particular, the inclusion of used vehicles in the scope of this policy has been something that is clearly not widely supported. I have therefore concluded that, as we proceed with the phase-out, in whatever form, we will not be looking to universally restrict the importation and registration of used vehicles.”
Club member Caroline is really happy that our contributions have made a difference:
“The preliminary announcement is just to offer reassurance that this part of the plan has been scrapped, the announcement that will follow will focus on the remaining aspects of the plan – which thankfully now doesn’t include used cars!”
Edward Pipon, who did a tremendous job of pulling all the concerned parties together commented:
“I firmly believe that collectively it is a show of united strength among the motor clubs and interested parties.”
“I can only thank you both for your contribution to get this part of the carbon neutral policy dropped, I am hoping that the ban on new petrol and diesel cars is also dropped and allow market forces to dictate the way forward for new car sales in the future.”
As a club, we are so pleased to see that the Jersey Government has listened to our concerns and those of the broader community. Not only would this have impacted on many businesses on the island, but have deprived current and future owners of the joys of Figaro ownership.
Huge thanks to Chapter Coordinators, Brian and Judi, club member Caroline, Edward, and everyone else who pulled together on this. We look forward to hearing whether Jersey will consider the same for new petrol and diesel vehicles, as this will still have an impact on people in Jersey, but for today this is a great victory for owners in Jersey!
