Insurance Explained – Classic Policy vs a Standard One

two doors, one with A written on it, and the other with B written on itWe all know how confusing insurance can be!

So, as part of a new series of articles over the coming months, the club’s trusted partner Darren Ansell, from ClassicLine, is going to help us all understand a bit more about insurance.

This time, we asked Darren some questions to help members understand the difference between a standard policy and classic car cover.

Why do classic car policies even exist?

“Generally speaking, classic car insurance is geared towards vehicles that are used as secondary cars and by enthusiasts which typically cover a lower annual mileage, so premiums are often lower than standard vehicle insurance.”

Does that mean that classic car policies only cover members who use the car occasionally?

“Some do – but the ClassicLine policy is different now the car is over 30 years old.”

Before you tell us about your policy, what are the general benefits of a classic car policy?

“The real value lies in the specialist features built into a classic car policy. These elements are designed around the specialist nature of classic and cherished vehicles and are often not available or come at an additional cost with standard motor policies.

“Your Figaro was only made by Nissan for one year and was a Japanese home market car. It wasn’t officially exported to the UK so if your Figaro needs repairing, access to the right expertise is essential. The Figaro’s unique design and heritage mean it often requires specialist skills and replacement parts that many mainstream garages, and even some generic classic car workshops, cannot provide.

“Things to look out for include:

  • Agreed valuation options – ensuring your vehicle is insured for how much you have invested.
  • Breakdown cover and recovery – included for those ‘what-if’ moments.
  • Choose your own repairer – so you can work with a trusted specialist who knows the car.
  • Legal expenses cover – usually an add on with standard vehicle policies.
  • Salvage Rights – if the worse happens you can still retain ownership of the car for any treasured parts or accessories.”

Does ClassicLine cover all these things?

“ClassicLine offers all the features listed above; an agreed valuation option supported by the club’s valuation team, breakdown cover and recovery, the opportunity to choose your own repairer, legal expenses cover, and salvage rights…

“Additionally, with ClassicLine, as the car is over 30 years old there is no limit on the mileage, and you can also include commuting to a place of work too. Your specialist policy will also cover you for being in the EU for up to 90 days with roadside assistance covering the EU too – ideal for joining the Figaro Owners Club on their European adventures!

“As an added bonus UK members of the Figaro Owners Club receive a 15% reduction on their premium, which also applies to other cars they take out insurance for.

“So, with lower annual premiums and a wide range of policy inclusions, classic car insurance is not only significantly better value for Figaro owners than a standard motor policy, but, more importantly, it’s designed to protect the time, money, and love you’ve invested in your car, and help you to get maximum enjoyment.

“If any Figaro Owners Club members want to find out more please ask them to get in touch to find out more on the benefits of insuring with us or for anything else relating to the Figaro Owners Club insurance scheme.”
